During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
