White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
