The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
