Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Spectators
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Attention
The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that examined his role in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its recent championship drought.
